Optimal Prevention and Control Strategy for Gout in Geese
2026-06-05
From April to July this year, during the gosling‑rearing period, gout in geese was extremely severe. We visited goose farms in Weihai, Jining, Weifang, Dezhou, and other regions, where mortality rates ranged from 10% to 50%.

Through extensive clinical experience, we have refined a comprehensive prevention and treatment protocol for gout in geese, achieving a success rate of over 90% and effectively keeping the mortality rate below 10%.
The specific plan is as follows:
First and foremost: the most important thing is to maintain stable temperature and humidity. Be sure to avoid drastic fluctuations in temperature and large temperature differentials.
Secondly:
Preventive protocol: From day 1 to day 5 of age, administer Qizhen Immunity‑Enhancing Granules and a multivitamin supplement; use an opening‑day medication for 3 days. Optional medications include enrofloxacin, amoxicillin, or cephalosporins; avoid aminoglycosides, polymyxins, and sulfonamides. At 1 or 2 days of age, administer a bivalent vaccine against gosling plague and reovirus; at 5–7 days of age, repeat the bivalent vaccination for gosling plague and reovirus, adding ceftiofur sodium to the vaccine formulation.
From 5 to 15 days of age, administer the “Tongchuang” (Bazheng San) in the evening with drinking water at a preventive dosage of one bag per 200 jin of water. Before 20 days of age, avoid administering the influenza vaccine whenever possible, and implement feed and lighting restrictions.
Treatment plan: Once goslings develop gout, it is most likely due to exposure to cold; the incidence of astrovirus infection is relatively low. Therefore, raise the temperature, maintain warmth while ensuring adequate ventilation—avoid overheating or stuffiness.
Starting on the first day, administer “E’Changtong” (Bazheng San) in the evening by mixing it with water at a rate of 100 jin of water per bag, allowing the birds to drink for 8–10 hours, and continue this regimen for 7 consecutive days. Beginning on the second day, during the daytime, provide drinking water mixed with “Kuai Ke,” “Chai Hu,” and “Jiang Gan Su Zhi,” and maintain this treatment for 5 days. In the evening, again administer “E’Changtong” (Bazheng San) in the drinking water.
This protocol achieves a prevention and treatment success rate of over 95%.
