Diagnosis and Treatment of a Case of Chicken Cestode Infection

2026-06-05

At a poultry farm in Jiangsu, 3,000 free-range chickens, 116 days old, were observed to be passing rust-colored droppings, exhibiting feed refusal, and producing loose, poorly formed feces. White, rice-grain–sized parasite eggs were found in the droppings, some of which were still wriggling slightly.

Anatomical examination revealed a large number of white tapeworms in the intestine.

Diagnosed as: Cestodiasis in chickens

Medication: Praziquantel premix, 160 jin per bag; administer a single, centralized dose, followed by a second dose after a 5-day interval.

Follow-up: After completing the treatment, the flock’s feces returned to normal, with virtually no mortality; occasional deaths occurred, but necropsy revealed no evidence of tapeworms.
