Case Study on the Treatment of Gyrodactylus in Ornamental Fish
2026-06-05
I. Introduction to the Problem:
Dactylogyridiasis is a common and frequently occurring disease that primarily infests the gill filaments of grass carp, silver carp, bighead carp, crucian carp, tilapia, and other species. Transmission occurs mainly via eggs and larvae, and the optimal temperature for its development ranges from 20 to 35°C. It is one of the most prevalent diseases in farmed fish, particularly during the fry and fingerling stages. Upon detecting infected fish, prompt diagnosis and targeted treatment are essential to prevent large-scale outbreaks and avoid substantial economic losses.

II. Microscopic examination as shown in the figure: excessive number of dactylogyrids.

III. Approach to Handling:
1. Insecticidal and disinfecting bottom-conditioning agent;
2. Strengthen the body and enhance disease resistance.
IV. Handling Plan:
① On the first day, apply the mebendazole solution at a rate of 2–2.5 mu per meter by external spraying; on the second day, in the morning, apply the quaternary ammonium iodine composite solution at a rate of 3–5 mu per meter by external spraying; in the afternoon, apply the high-efficiency bottom‑decomposition agent at a rate of 250 g per mu as a dry broadcast.
② Liver & Gallbladder Health Plus + Aquatic Nano Gold Vitamins + Enzyme-Enhanced Prebiotics. Mix 40–80 jin of feed per batch and administer for 3–5 days.

V. Feedback on Results:
There are no more dactylogyrids on the gills, the fish have stopped dying, and their feeding has resumed and is steadily improving.
