Whiteleg Shrimp — Bacterial White Spot Treatment Protocol

2026-06-05

1. Problem Overview:

As feed input increases, residual feed and feces accumulate in the water, leading to fermentation that degrades water quality and deteriorates the bottom substrate, thereby promoting the proliferation of pathogenic bacteria. In such adverse aquatic conditions, shrimp immunity and resistance are compromised, and extensive bacterial colonization can trigger bacterial white spot disease.

Date: June 12, 2024

Location: Xiqing District, Tianjin City

Cultured species: Whiteleg shrimp

Pond area: 40 mu; water depth: 1.6 meters.

Water quality parameters: pH: 8.4, Ammonia nitrogen: 0, Nitrite: 0

Following disease onset, the shrimp exhibit sluggish responses and reduced feeding; small punctate spots appear on the cephalothorax, which is difficult to peel off, while the exoskeleton remains intact.

2. Handling Plan:

Stress‑relief nutrient + life‑enhancing factor: Apply one bag per 3–5 mu of water to strengthen the health and resilience of prawns.

Zhongren Gold Iodine: Apply one bottle per 3–5 mu of water; can be used 1–2 consecutive times. Potassium Peroxymonosulfate Effervescent Tablets: Broadcast one bag over 2.5–3 mu of water surface.

High-Calcium Hard-Shell Booster: Dissolve and apply throughout the pond at a rate of 2.5–3 mu per meter to promote robust shell formation in shrimp.

3. Feedback on Results:

On repeat microscopic examination, no bacterial white spots were observed, and the shrimp remained asymptomatic.

Bacterial white spot disease can generally be alleviated by promoting molting. It is most prevalent at temperatures between 20°C and 28°C, typically occurring from June to July. During an outbreak, the disease weakens shrimp’s resistance and immune function, often accompanied by other systemic symptoms, leading to mass mortality. In aquaculture, it is advisable to frequently renew the pond bottom to reduce pathogen loads; additionally, regular liver‑protecting and gut‑supporting treatments can help strengthen shrimp health.
